Job Summary

The Intermediate Process Engineer (P.Eng.) will provide sustainable capital and operational process engineering support to clients such as improvements within existing facilities, including but not limited to conceptual design of improvement ideas, replacement of existing equipment and design and implementation of new capital projects. The pace of work is fast and changes from day to day, which requires an agile person who can manage and execute many activities simultaneously in a challenging environment. This position is an opportunity for a high level of growth and career development and requires a motivated individual who can constantly learn and adapt. It is critical that the successful candidate is a positive addition to the existing strong and cohesive team.

Education & Qualifications

  • Graduate of a recognized university with a bachelor’s degree in Chemical/Process Engineering discipline, or equivalent
  • Registered as a P.Eng. in good standing with APEGA.
  • Preference will be given to a candidate at least 4 years of progressive process engineering experience, however team fit is most important
  • Experience developing drawings including process PFDs, P&IDs and material balances
  • Able to work independently preparing high quality industrial process engineering calculations and deliverables
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs used to create reports and documents
  • Experience with Process Hazard Analysis methodology (i.e. HAZOP) is considered an asset
  • Site/field based industrial work experience is considered an asset
  • Experience in tailings processes and ANSI code experience with slurry pumps is considered an asset
  • Experience in developing operating philosophies and control narratives is considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Execute process engineering activities such as: the preparation of studies, designs, and detailed engineering for various projects including the development of process design criteria; troubleshooting; preparation of engineering calculations, analyses and studies; development of process simulations, PFDs and P&IDs, input to LDTs, equipment sizing and specifications, datasheets; and report writing.
  • Support the team to develop and direct project plans which maintain technical excellence, budget, schedule and contractual requirements.
  • Take a lead role in multi-discipline projects, including developing deliverables from concept through calculations and detailed design, and final / stamped issue.
  • Actively engage directly with clients to understand their requirements and expectations and deliver top quality solutions.
  • Complete process equipment calculations and simulations.
  • Communicate with vendors and assist with procurement as needed.
  • Manage project budgets ensuring work is completed according to the defined contractual scope and execution strategy.
  • Provide additional support as needed including collaborating with other disciplines (mechanical, electrical, structural) in order to deliver well-rounded solutions to clients.
  • Support business development activities such as liaising with clients as a representative of Local and identifying, developing, and maintaining professional connections to enhance and maintain business for the company.
  • Identify potential project opportunities and work with the Local team to grow the business.
  • Report to the Process Engineering Lead on progress of work.
  • Review and issue drawings and calculations, following Local standards and procedures.
  • Demonstrate commitment to safety and quality.
  • Travel to the field for project scoping, verification, construction support and meeting with clients as needed.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to more junior team members.

Position Conditions

  • Hours of work per week may vary depending on available work and skillset of individual, but the intention is that this is a full-time position.

Job Summary

The Process Engineering Department Lead is expected to provide both technical and team leadership, as well as collaboration with other multidiscipline project teams within Local Engineering. This highly motivated individual is responsible for managing the Process Engineers at the Local Engineering Sherwood Park location.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the day-to-day management of the team including:

Managing resources

  • Work with Engineering Manager and Project Managers to identify upcoming work loads and team needs, staff accordingly
  • Work with HR team to attract and hire high performing employees
  • Establish and maintain relations with potential future employees to support increases in workload demand in a timely manner
  • Establish and maintain Contractor relations to support workload fluctuations
  • Ultimately responsible for resource management within the team (hiring decisions, disbursement of raises to team members, letting team members go when required, etc.)
  • Assigning appropriate team resources to projects

 

Process Team Performance management

  • Setting clear expectations for team performance
  • Working with Engineering Manager to ensure adequate tools and procedures are in place for the team to excel
  • Addressing sub-par performance within the team via corrective coaching
  • Working with Engineering Manager to address sub-par cross-discipline performance issues
  • Identifying and removing roadblocks / barriers preventing the team from excelling

 

Development

  • Regular interactions with team members to understand their short and long term career aspirations
  • Identify training needs to support team and individual development, requesting training funding from the Local Engineering Manager
  • Supporting team members in meeting their and Local’s development goals
  • Ensure new hires and existing Process engineering staff have sufficient training and resources to provide a high level of service delivery.

 

Quality

  • Ensure team members understand and perform work in line with Local Quality Procedures
  • Assigning competent team members for scopes of work including checkers
  • Working with Engineering Manager to document Non-Conformances and Lessons Learned, communicate to team and implement corrections
  • Work with Engineering Manager to implement discipline specific tools (processes, checklists, etc.) where required

 

Team Growth, Planning

  • Identify new growth areas for the discipline and for Local Engineering
  • Set departmental goals for growth and development towards building Local Engineering into an industry leader where people enjoy coming to work
  • Prepare and execute department development plans for achieving goals

 

Input to Proposals & Estimates

  • Input to project estimates
  • Work with Project Managers to identify scope changes, input to PCNs
  • Manage team project budgets ensuring work is completed according to the defined contractual scope and execution strategy.
  • Understanding project budgets/schedules/progress and regular communications with team to ensure on track to deliver
  • Identifying and removing roadblocks / barriers preventing the team from meeting project plan

  • Act as PM/PE on projects where assigned
  • Act as Sr. Process Engineer where assigned

Education & Qualifications

  • Graduate of a recognized university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering discipline, or equivalent.

  • Experience with ASME and API standards for piping. 
  • Experience with rotating and static equipment is considered an asset. 
  • Experience with CAD design software is considered an asset. 
  • Experience performing static and/or dynamic stress analysis is considered an asset.

  • Execute mechanical engineering activities within a scope of work that includes everything from conceptual design development through to detailed design, procurement support, construction support and commissioning, depending on the needs of the client.

  • Manage and grow pipe stress work including developing models and completing stress analysis of piping systems as needed.

  • Develop, review and stamp isometrics.  
  • Specify procurement requirements for equipment and assist with procurement as needed (typically vessels, pumps, etc.). 
  • Work with and develop piping and equipment specifications as needed. 
  • Develop Engineering Work Packages.  
  • Manage project budgets ensuring work is completed according to the defined contractual scope and execution strategy. 
  • Provide additional support as needed including collaborating with other disciplines (process, electrical, structural) in order to deliver well-rounded solutions to clients. 
  • Review and provide input to the Design team on technical drawings.
